Sweat gland suction (suction curettage)

Sweat gland suction (suction curettage)

Sweat gland suction (suction curettage) of the armpits is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic. Through two small incisions in the skin, as many sweat glands as possible are scraped off (curetted) with a thin special cannula and suctioned out. The small wounds are closed with very fine sutures. A pressure bandage is applied for 24 hours. Extreme shoulder movements should be avoided for the first few weeks. The stitches are removed after ten days.

The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis. A pressure bandage and small drains are removed after 24 hours. The stitches dissolve by themselves and do not need to be removed. Extreme shoulder movements should be avoided for six weeks.

Summary of sweat gland suction

This operation leads to a permanent reduction in sweating in most patients. However, it is very rare for increased sweating to occur again after some time. In these cases, a new operation may be necessary.

Treatment with botulinum toxin A

A special agent blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the sweat glands. Although the (autonomic) nerves continue to give the command to produce sweat, the sweat glands largely cease their activity.

After preparation with an anaesthetic cream, the product is injected under the armpit skin using very fine cannulas. After three to five days, sweat production begins to dry up.

Treatment of the hands or feet requires twilight sleep or a local nerve block.

After six to nine months, the nerves have regenerated, sweating increases again and the treatment can be repeated.

Permanent treatment of hyperhidrosis on the hands and feet is only possible by sclerosing nerve nodes on the spinal column.

Cutting out the sweat glands

The most radical treatment method for hyperhidrosis in the armpit is the excision of the sweat glands. During this operation, the armpit skin with the sweat glands is excised under local anaesthesia. The resulting defect is closed by moving the surrounding skin (Z-plasty).

After healing, a Z-shaped scar remains in the armpit.

Questions & answers about sweat gland removal in Frankfurt

What do I need to consider after the operation?

In the first 2 weeks, sports that put strain on the shoulders should be avoided. Do not smoke (or smoke little) for 3 weeks.

What complications can occur?

In addition to the general complications such as haematoma and infection, circulatory disorders of the skin can occur (especially in heavy smokers). In rare cases, sweating may recur. A test can then be carried out to determine whether there is still an area with too many sweat glands.

An overview of the most common risks:

  • Bruising
  • Infections of the wound area
  • Formation of abscesses
  • Tissue death

What scars can be expected?

Suction curettage results in fine, approx. 7 mm long scars that are barely visible.

Which anaesthetic is used and is a hospital stay necessary?

Sweat gland suction is usually performed on an outpatient basis and under local anaesthetic. You can leave our clinic immediately after your procedure. However, you should not actively participate in road traffic.

When can I go back to work?

Commercial activities can be resumed one to two days after your operation.

Physically strenuous activity is agreed on a case-by-case basis, as the restriction after the operation depends on the type of physical exertion - the restriction usually lasts around 14 days.

Can I finance the cost of my sweat gland removal?

Yes - Financing of the costs of your sweat gland removal is possible via our partner if you have the appropriate credit rating.
