The final shape of the ear is already formed by the age of four. Ear correction in Frankfurt can therefore be performed on children as young as pre-school age. At the time of the operation, the child should be suffering to a certain extent and the desire for correction should be perceptible. However, ear correction is also possible in the same way for adults. Protruding ears are most commonly created. However, it is also possible to reduce or reshape the auricle and/or the earlobe. The ear is reshaped during an outpatient operation lasting one to two hours under twilight sleep and local anaesthetic. The results of ear reshaping are very satisfactory for most patients.

What happens during the operation?
During the operation, which takes around one to two hours under local anaesthetic and twilight sleep, the cartilage is exposed through an incision at the edge of the auricle. The thickened cartilage usually has to be ground thin so that it can be shaped more easily. The position, shape and size of the pinna can then be corrected. The desired shape is fixed with fine sutures. The skin is sutured with absorbable sutures. A compression bandage is applied.
Ear correction for adults can usually be performed on an outpatient basis. For small children, the operation is performed under anaesthetic. Afterwards, the child and mum/dad stay in hospital overnight.

What needs to be considered before the operation?
Children should be involved in the information and counselling before the operation. It is advisable to plan around seven days off work after the operation.
What scars can be expected?
A stabilising bandage is applied for 24 hours after the operation. A headband should be worn day and night for the first week. The stitches dissolve by themselves and do not need to be removed. It is necessary to wear a headband at night for six weeks. Care should also be taken to protect the ears from bruising and other external influences as well as direct sunlight during this period.
What complications can occur?
The complications that can occur with any operation (post-operative bleeding, wound infection, excessive scarring, nerve injury) are extremely rare with otopexy. Bruising and swelling can occur after an ear correction, but these subside after a short time.
