Removal of a breast implant in Frankfurt

There are various reasons why women decide to have breast implants removed. For some, health concerns take centre stage, while others have changed their aesthetic preferences. This document describes in detail the reasons for implant removal, the surgical procedure, the risks and benefits and the aftercare measures.

Reasons for implant removal

Reasons for the removal of a breast implant

  • Medical reasons: Complications such as capsular contractures, ruptures or infections may necessitate removal.
  • Aesthetic considerations: Changes in breast shape or size or the feeling that the implants no longer meet your expectations.
  • Personal reasons: Some women choose to have them removed for personal or lifestyle reasons, such as sports or new life stages.
  • BIA-ALCL risk: Over the past ten years, the occurrence of BIA-ALCL, a rare (approx. 850 cases out of approx. 40 million implant patients worldwide) but malignant disease associated with heavily textured breast implants, has led to uncertainty among some patients. The heavily textured (roughened) implants were used in the novoLinea Clinic and since this rare disease became known, we have only implanted microtextured implants that are not suspected of being associated with BIA-ALCL.
  • BI (Breast Implant Illness): This is a "disease" that is not recognised by the WHO and for which there is no scientific evidence. A large number of non-specific complaints such as chronic fatigue, joint pain, palpitations, forgetfulness and concentration disorders, migraines, muscle weakness, numbness, skin rashes, depressive mood, hair loss, hormonal complaints and others are associated with implants in implant patients - of course only when no diagnosis can be made with all other methods. There are patients who report an improvement in their symptoms after removing the implants, but there are also patients who have no improvement in their symptoms after removing the implants. Whether the "cured" patients are due to a placebo effect has not been researched. And whether there is a connection with the breast implants at all is more than doubtful.

Important note:

To date (as of 2024), however, recommends No health authority removal of the implants worldwide without the existence of a diagnosis or the occurrence of problems. Nevertheless, in exceptional cases, depending on the individual life situation, it may make sense to consider this step.

The removal process

The removal of breast implants is a surgical procedure that is performed under general anaesthetic. The exact procedure may vary depending on the case, but generally involves the following steps:

Preparation for the operation

Before the operation, a comprehensive consultation is held with the surgeon to clarify individual reasons and expectations. Examinations are carried out to check the general state of health and rule out any exclusion criteria.

The surgical procedure

  • Preparation: Before the operation, a consultation takes place with the surgeon in which the reasons for the explantation and the desired results are discussed.
  • Anaesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic.
  • Removal of the implant: The surgeon opens the previous incision site to remove the implant. If complications such as capsular fibrosis have occurred, it may also be necessary to remove the scar tissue.
The existing incision from the original implantation is often used to avoid additional scarring. Additional measures may be necessary to achieve an attractive, aesthetic result. In the case of very large implants, a simultaneous breast lift may also be necessary in order to achieve a beautiful breast shape.
  • After the operation: The healing process usually takes several weeks. Pain and swelling are normal at first, and compression bandages or garments are usually worn to aid healing.

Risks and complications

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and possible complications associated with the removal of breast implants. The most common include

  • Infections: Although rare, infections can occur and require medical treatment.
  • Bleeding: Postoperative haemorrhaging may occur, which may require further surgery.
  • Scarring: Even if the existing incision is used, scars may remain that fade over time.
  • Changes in the shape of the breast: After removal, the breast will have a different shape or size, which may require additional correction.

Aftercare and recovery

Aftercare following breast implant removal is essential for the healing process. Here are some important points:

Recovery time

The recovery period varies from person to person, but as a rule, activities should be limited for a few weeks. Light physical activity can be resumed after about two weeks, while intensive activities and heavy lifting should be avoided.

Follow-up examinations

Regular follow-up appointments with your plastic and aesthetic surgeon are essential to monitor the healing process and recognise any complications at an early stage. We will provide you with instructions on how to care for the incision site and tips on how to avoid infection.

Long-term results

Long-term results can be influenced by various factors, such as skin type, age and the original size of the breast implants. It is important to have realistic expectations and recognise that further procedures may be necessary to achieve the desired aesthetic result.

Are there alternatives?

  • After removal, you can decide not to have any further implants inserted or to improve the appearance of the breast with a breast lift.
  • Implant replacement is also possible.
  • Breast augmentation with autologous fat is also possible after implant removal
